Beyond the Classroom Award Program
Overview
Awards from this program will range from approximately $500 - $4,000, but can also depend on the specific request and funding source; awards may be made using a combination of funds. L&S Beyond the Classroom (BTC) funds provide financial support for students engaged in the following types of positions (this list is not exhaustive):
- Internship
- Research
- Community Service
- Field Work
- Mentorship
- Study Abroad
- Conference Presentation/Participation
Some BTC funds have restrictions based on major, BTC experience type, and other personal characteristics (first generation, major, etc.). Read more about the funds on the Awards website here.
Preference will be given to applications with the following:
- Applicants who, without this funding, would likely not be able to participate in the experiential learning opportunity they have identified. If this is your situation, be sure to mention it in your application!
- Those who articulate the connection between the experiential learning position or opportunity and your personal, academic, and/or career goals
- Identification of the impact to be made through engagement in the experiential learning activity.
- Applicants who have secured experiential learning positions and fully describe the position in the application. If you are in the process of applying for a position(s), there will be a place in the application to share that as well.
- A minimum of 10 scheduled hours per week for the duration of a regular academic quarter; or a minimum of 20 scheduled hours per week during a summer session. Please note: opportunities of fewer than an average of 20 hours per week during the summer, and multiple short-term experiences may be considered, but will not be prioritized. If your summer opportunity is close to 20 hours per week (or 10 hours during the regular academic year), we still encourage you to apply.

FAQs
- What does "good standing" and "full-time status" refer to?
- Good standing means that you have an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher and are meeting minimum progress. Full-time status means that you must be enrolled in at least 12 units in a given regular academic year quarter. Please refer to guidelines on Academic Standing for more information.
- What does it mean that Beyond the Classroom Awards are not based on financial aid eligibility or status?
- Financial aid encompasses grants, loans, scholarships, and work-study. Some students may not be eligible to receive financial aid through FAFSA or CADAA due to their status or income levels. This is not a factor of consideration for our Beyond the Classroom Awards.
- What if I'm still not sure whether I qualify?
- No problem! We encourage you to reach out to us if you have any questions about your eligibility. You can email Mark Foncannon, Director of Student Engagement and Success, at [email protected].
