Faculty Fellowships Provide Freedom for Research

From the history of black women chefs to a documentary film on dwarfism to African music in Brazil, the UC Davis Humanities Institute’s new faculty research fellows will pursue a wide range of topics this year. The fellowship promotes interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, who will meet weekly to discuss their research and creative work.

Christopher Markus (M.A., English, ’96) was co-writer, with Stephen McFeely (M.A. English,’96), of the just-released movie "Avengers: Endgame.” The two met at UC Davis in the creative writing program. They've written scripts for the "Captain America" films, the "Chronicles of Narnia" movie franchise, and won an Emmy for their screenplay of HBO movie, "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers."

Alumni-Directed Movie About Prisoner and Activist Screening at UC Davis

“Breathin’: The Eddy Zheng Story,” an award-winning documentary about a teenager tried as an adult who served 20 years in prison, will be shown at UC Davis on Jan. 31. Director Ben Wang, who earned a degree in Asian American studies from UC Davis in 2004, and Zheng will attend and take part in a discussion.

Only a work produced by the theatre industry could so blatantly express the feeling that many liberal-arts degree candidates might be already thinking. In fact, one could exchange the word “English” for almost any other liberal arts degree, including “theatre.” The character Princeton in the musical Avenue Q sings:

What do you do with a B.A. in English? / What is my life going to be?
