Course Description:
Whether they are "theme parks" or the defining myths of the modern age, superhero films reflect the world around us: our fears, politics, identities, and fantasies. In this course, we will examine genre, symbolism, adaptation, industrial influence, and the cultural histories behind iconic heroes. Along the way, we will ask how superhero stories shape -- and are shaped by -- contemporary conversations about race, gender, disability, power, & violence.
This course culminates in a research or creative project.
