Course Description:

Examines the historical transformation of American television from broadcast to subscription and digital distribution, with particular attention to prestige scripted series since 1990. Analyzes the technological, economic, and institutional conditions that produced the so-called "second golden age," alongside the transmediality and convergence culture these conditions enabled. Case studies drawn from Twin Peaks, The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Girls, and Game of Thrones. Topics include class, race, gender, sexuality, urban decline, US political identity, collective memory, and the affective systems through which audio-visual media address audiences.
