The Largest Student-Run Event in the Nation: Behind the Scenes at UC Davis Picnic Day
Every spring, UC Davis transforms into something unforgettable as people gather for the largest student-run event in the United States: Picnic Day. By 7:00 a.m., things are in full-swing as people fill the campus, navigating their way through exhibits, demonstrations, performances, food trucks, tabling, and more.
Since its founding in 1909, Picnic Day has become the crown-jewel event of the UC system and the signature event of UC Davis. It’s a day when families, alumni, and thousands of visitors converge to celebrate one of our school’s most iconic traditions – and for many people – Picnic Day is the one day when the university feels most alive. It is exciting, energetic, and deeply connected to the spirit of the community that makes UC Davis, UC Davis.
But, behind the 75,000+ attendees and packed itinerary is another side of Picnic Day that most people never get to experience.
This year, I experienced the event not only as a College of Letters and Science Ambassador but also as the Operations Director for the 112th Picnic Day. While many attendees spent the day attending the events and enjoying the tradition, I spent most of my day behind the scenes, ensuring everything ran smoothly with my walkie-talkie attached to my hip.
From the 5:00 a.m. early morning setup to the constant troubleshooting throughout the day, there was always something happening. Picnic Day may appear effortless from the outside, but what makes it so iconic is the incredible amount of student leadership, collaboration, and dedication that occurs behind the scenes. Being a part of the operation has given me a completely different appreciation for the tradition. Picnic Day is not just a campus event; it is a one-of-a-kind celebration planned by students who care deeply about creating an experience that represents the best of UC Davis. Every event coordinated, every yard sign placed, (including my favorite sign of all time, “Please do not climb the tree”), and every problem solved contributes to something much bigger than one person. Seeing students work together under pressure while remaining committed to making the day special reminded me of why UC Davis stands out as a community.
Being behind the scenes didn’t stop me from experiencing some of my favorite moments, engaging prospective students and families in discussion. The moment those conversations started, the College of Letters and Science ambassador in me took over as I found myself talking about my college, major, struggles, and success stories. We discussed everything from academics and student life to community, campus, and the everyday Davis student experience.
This is what made Picnic Day special for me. It is a representation of our diversity as a University. It is not just about academics; it’s a multifaceted community full of opportunities, fun traditions, research programs, and so much more.
This year’s theme, ‘The Journey Home: Destination Davis,’ truly captured what Picnic Day embodies. Families walked through our campus, alumni gathered to reminisce about their years, children had fun at the Children's Discovery Fair, and prospective students began to imagine the future ahead as Aggies.
Built on collaboration and student leadership, the 112th Picnic Day showed the true heart of UC Davis. Powering this enduring tradition are 90+ students working hard to create lasting memories, and this year, I was proud to be one of them. To the picnic day Board, including Directors, Assistant Directors, volunteers, and advisors, thank you for your work. Seeing so many students work together towards a shared goal reflects the collaborative spirit that makes UC Davis very special.
