Course Description:

What can Iranian cinema tell us about Iran's past and its future? Deeply connected to the history of photography but also a unique medium in its own right, Iranian cinema defied the world's expectations that the 1979 Revolution and an Islamist regime would produce cultural stagnancy. How did this happen? Why and how did an Islamic regime produce a cinema that was not stymied by rigid censorship laws, but has instead transcended its limits to inspire the world with its visual richness, beauty, and even frank critique of the regime that created it?
