Whilst many UC Davis undergraduates study Latin to teach the language or to utilize it for research purposes, the majority of students benefit from learning Latin in more indirect ways. Latin dominated Western European intellectual life and culture for two thousand years, and its profound influence on the English language means that those who study Latin are able to develop a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of English, becoming better speakers and writers as a result. On a cultural level, those who study Latin are able to broaden their perspectives and enter worlds of learning and debate and art and beauty and politics that still resonate. The knowledge acquired by students studying Latin leads to excellent communicators, writers, and culturally diverse individuals in any field of work.
