L&S Turns 75
75 Years of Excellence. Inspiring the Future.
Welcome to the College of Letters and Science's 75th Anniversary Celebration! We are grateful to have you along on this journey!
There are so many things that make our college special. For me, one of the most amazing factors is the degree of excellence inherent in our programs that’s not found anywhere else. Each of our ranked programs is considered among the best in the country. That excellence attracts the most brilliant students in the country. Our student body is one of the most diverse in the state. Many are the first in their families to pursue higher education. After graduating, our students build lives they never dared imagine.
Our research continues to touch the lives of millions every day. Our work is cited more than any other university or think tank in the creation of local, state and federal government policies. We are increasing our understanding of the universe and harnessing the power of psychedelics to usher in a new era of brain health. We are leaders in climate research and climate change solutions. We lead the world’s most difficult social and political conversations and offer new ways of understanding who we are through the arts and humanities.
Our alumni stand as a testament to the power of the preparation we provide in the College of Letters and Science. These include former San Francisco Mayor London Breed and Hawaii Supreme Court justice Paula Nakayama. They are innovative scientists like Climate Institute scientist Michael MacCracken and astronaut Tracy Dyson. They are artists like actor and comedian Hasan Minhaj and best-selling author Deborah Harkness. More than leaders in their fields, our alumni are visionaries. They meet some of the world’s greatest challenges with enthusiasm, creativity, passion and effectiveness.
Taken together, our community charts a path to a better future for all of us as well as providing the tools to get there. I am proud, as I hope you are, to share in this great endeavor.

Minds Over Matters Podcast
Minds Over Matters focuses on discoveries, research and insights that increase our understanding of ourselves and our world. We provide a lens through which the audience might better understand humanity’s current place in history — hopefully inspiring them to consider more carefully our future. We seek to thoroughly examine an array of individual subjects (tiles) and connect them to the big picture (mosaic). Our approach sidesteps the mistaken assumption that the world is a binary “right/wrong” proposition, and simply communicates what we have learned, what we are learning, what we hope to learn and why it matters.
