Julia Koerner, who worked on the Black Panther movie and is at the forefront of 3D printing and sustainable design, will be the guest for the UC Davis Alberini Family Speaker Series in Design. Koerner, whose creative endeavors include architecture, fashion, sculpture and product design, will give a presentation titled “Models & Models” on April 22 at 4 p.m.
When UC Davis design major Matthew Kwong began looking online for places to get tested for COVID-19, he found little and bad information.
He figured if finding a testing site was difficult for a tech-savvy 20-year-old, for others — especially vulnerable and elderly populations — it would be nearly impossible. So, he spent months creating an interactive COVID-19 testing site map.
Lesley-Ann Noel, an innovator in design education, research and practice who is known for her work on “emancipatory design,” will be the speaker for the fourth annual Alberini Family Speaker Series in Design at UC Davis.
Two UC Davis student teams are taking part in the international Biodesign Challenge June 15–19. They are among 45 finalists from 12 countries who will present their projects during the virtual Biodesign Challenge Summit 2020. This is the first year UC Davis has had two teams in the competition. Five of the seven students are in the College of Letters and Science.
UC Davis College of Letters and Science graduate students aren’t letting the lack of a physical space stop them from celebrating and sharing their work with the public. The Arts & Humanities 2020 Graduate Exhibition, usually held at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, will instead take place on the museum website May 28–June 28.
The California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC), part of the UC Davis College of Letters and Science’s Department of Design, recently received a $5 million grant to expand electrical training programs in California and Nevada. The award from the U.S. Department of Labor will provide funding for 25 organizations with electrical training and apprenticeships programs.
The most recent U.S. News & World Report ranking of university graduate programs places UC Davis fine arts programs as No. 15 in the nation. This is a jump from No. 27 three years ago and ties UC Davis with UC Berkeley. Master of Fine Arts programs in the College of Letters and Science include art studio, design, dramatic arts and creative writing.
