East Asian Studies

Major and minor

Understanding East Asia is critically important. Not only does the region shape today’s global culture and economy; the US long has strong economic, political, and cultural influence in the region. The East Asian Studies major enables students to gain deep understanding of a region linked for centuries by language, tradition, and trade as well as through the exchange of philosophical ideas, religion, literature, and art. The major helps students understand recent transformations in the region. The major provides students with an interdisciplinary training that combines language courses with courses exploring intriguing aspects of culture, society, and history. Students learn about Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and their interactions with neighbors and the world.

Real World Outcomes

UC Davis graduates in our major are well prepared for careers that involve working with East Asian affairs as well as for graduate studies involving culture, history, and society in East Asia. Common career choices include journalism, international business, government service, teaching and social services.
