How to Declare Your Major

Ready to Declare Your Major?

Follow these steps before beginning the process.

Step 1: Meet with a Major Advisor to Create a Plan

If possible, we recommend meeting with a major advisor prior to submitting the change of major form. They can assist you with creating an Academic Plan, help you to get connected with the department, and answer your questions about the major.

  • Check their website to see if advising is available prior to declaring the major. See the General Catalog for Office & Contact Information.
  • Hint: Use the Degree Worksheets tab and the Academic Plan (OASIS ->Forms & Petitions ->Academic Plan) to create your plan.

Step 2: Complete Required Preparatory Coursework

Some majors require students to complete specific courses with a minimum GPA or to meet with an advisor or to create an academic plan or degree worksheet prior to officially declaring the major. Make sure to check for these requirements prior to submitting your change of major form.

  • Change of Major form: Check OASIS – Forms & Petitions – Change of Major form, select your planned major from the pull-down menu, read “Important Major Information” for specific steps to take to declare that major.
  • General Catalog: Check the General Catalog for your major information and requirements.  Make note of any “preparatory requirements” that must be completed prior to declaring the major.  Hint: “Preparatory requirements” is not the same as “preparatory subject matter.”  Students are not necessarily required to complete all lower division coursework prior to declaring the major.

Step 3: Declare by the end of your 5th Quarter

Remember, you must declare your major prior to completing 90 units.

Petitions are only accepted electronically and are available on the "Forms and Petitions" tab on the OASIS portal.

  • Declare your major by the end of your 5th quarter of enrollment (Winter quarter of second year)
  • An undeclared hold will be placed for the quarter when you will exceed 90 units completed. (Note: this does not include units completed prior to matriculation at UC Davis such as AP units.)
  • Pay attention to these requirements to declare/change a major
    • Successfully complete at least 1 quarter at UC Davis
    • Be in good academic standing
    • 2.000 minimum GPA in courses completed in the major
    • Complete any preparatory/GPA requirements

Step 4: Submit your petition!
