Geared toward mathematics, statistics and computer science graduate students, MAT 280: “Fairness, Privacy and Trustworthiness in Machine Learning” aims to elevate tenets of social responsibility when it comes to developing machine learning and artificial intelligence-based systems. The special topics class focuses on the mathematical concepts underlying machine learning and how these concepts can be used for the better.

Five associate professors in the College of Letters and Science have been honored with an additional title: Chancellor’s Fellow. Assistant professor of statistics Jairo Fúquene Patiño has been recognized as a 2020 CAMPOS faculty scholar by the UC Davis Center for the Advancement of Multicultural Perspectives on Science, or CAMPOS. The center focuses on building diversity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

His research focuses on Bayesian approaches, which involve applying probability to statistical analysis of data-driven problems in public health and medicine, environmental data, and survey sampling data, among others.

Jane-Ling Wang, distinguished professor of statistics, has received a Humboldt Research Award in recognition of her lifetime achievements in statistics.

To stay a step ahead of the virus, an interdisciplinary team of UC Davis researchers will use mathematics, data science and experimental biology to predict potential mutations of the novel coronavirus. The proposed research was recently funded by a $200,000 RAPID grant from the National Science Foundation.
