Simultaneous Enrollment

Overview

Simultaneous Enrollment is a process that allows UC Davis students to take courses at a non-University of California campus while still enrolled at UC Davis. Typically, students may not obtain transfer credit for courses taken at another institution while also enrolled UC Davis. However, exceptions to this regulation may be obtained via petition to the College. If a petition is approved, units earned are counted toward minimum progress for the quarter in which the simultaneous enrollment occurred.

Regulations on Simultaneous Enrollment

Eligibility

Students in the College of Letters and Science must meet the following criteria to be eligible to submit a Simultaneous Enrollment petition.

  • Good Academic Standing: You must be in good academic standing at UC Davis. If you are currently on Academic Notice or Subject to Disqualification status, your petition will not be approved.
  • Full-Time UC Davis Enrollment: You must be enrolled in at least 12 units at UC Davis. Please keep in mind that your UC Davis coursework should remain your priority.
  • Enrolling in a California Institution: Requests for simultaneous enrollment will only be considered if you are attending an institution in the state of California. Requests to enroll simultaneously at an out-of-state or international institution will be denied.

Important - Prior Approval for Simultaneous Enrollment is Required
You must submit a petition and receive approval before enrolling at another institution. If you complete coursework at another institution without prior permission, a petition will not be approved and you will not receive credit.

Summer Exception

Approval is not required if you enroll at another institution during the summer session - even if you are also enrolled in a UC Davis Summer Session. However, you are required to send an official transcript to Undergraduate Admissions after your final grade(s) are posted to your official transcript.

Simultaneous Enrollment Petition

While there are many reasons students request to enroll simultaneously, approval of a petition is not guaranteed. Each request is evaluated individually based on a review of the student's academic record and the circumstances detailed in the petition. Below are common examples of reasons why a petition may or may not be approved.

Petitions That May Be Considered:
  • Completing a course series you started at a community college (e.g., language or STEM sequences).
  • A language course that is not offered at UC Davis
  • For students who are filed to graduate only - Enroll in a course not offered at UC Davis that fulfills a requirement during the quarter in which you will be graduating
Petitions That May Be Denied:
  • Course is for a major in which you are not currently declared
    • Note: If you intend to change your major, then a petition may be considered provided your intended major advisor confirms the course is required
  • The same course is available at UC Davis in the term you want to take it
  • Enrollment would violate Senior Residence requirements which require a minimum number of final units be taken at UC Davis
  • Course is from a non-California institution
