Lunn Lecture: Did Science Really Launch the Modern Era?

Lorraine Daston, executive director of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and professor in the Committee of Social Thought at the University of Chicago, will give this year’s Lunn Lecture, “The Strange Modernity of Science,” on Thursday, April 12.

A new book by Marvin Talso (B.A., history, ’72, and Cred., ’72) and his wife, Linda, "Redwood Valley," tells the story of their Mendocino County community through archival photographs.

Double Majors: Do What You Love

 

For anyone struggling with the decision to double major, UC Davis undergraduate Harris Niazi has some sage advice. “Don’t ever ask yourself what if,” he said. “Just go for it. Even if it doesn’t pan out, you’re at least stuck with one major that you love.”

Amanda Nguyen entered UC Davis as a history major, eager to explore her passion for human rights. She said she was drawn to the idea of interdisciplinary research. “As a history major, I’m not just memorizing facts. When I make an argument about the past, I have to take into account art, socioeconomics, literature, philosophy, politics and more.”

1972 - Ken White

Ken White (B.A., history and English '72, Cred. '73) has two new books out, with more on the way. "12 Days of Central Valley Christmas," the second of a trilogy of children's Christmas books, and "Touchstones: Life and Times of Modesto," a nonfiction book about White's hometown, were both published in 2017. "Twas the Night Before Christmas … in Modesto" will be released in November 2018. Taking the Quick Route to a Double Major

 

When it came to choosing a major, the possibilities were wide open for Avery Hom. Avery grew up near Seattle and entered UC Davis as a freshman with junior-level status thanks to Washington’s Running Start program. Instead of finishing out his junior and senior years in high school, Avery attended community college through the program while also earning credit towards his high school graduation. 

Historian Wins Equity Prize

Associate Professor Lorena Oropeza received the 2017 Equity Award from the American Historical Association last week for excellence in recruiting and retaining historians from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.
