Chemistry professor William H. Casey is one of 70 new fellows of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The ACS Fellows Program recognizes outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession and the society. The 2019 ACS Fellows will be honored at a special ceremony during the ACS National Meeting and Expo in San Diego on Aug. 26.
The Mind & Life Institute, a nonprofit organization co-founded by the Dalai Lama, recently featured UC Davis neuroscientist Clifford Saron in a blog tribute. Saron, a research scientist at the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain in the College of Letters and Science, studies the long-term effects of intensive meditation.
Professor of Statistics Debashis Paul has been elected to Fellowship in the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. IMS Fellowship honors the outstanding research and professional contributions of members in the field of statistics and probability. Each newly-elected Fellow will be presented with a plaque during the IMS awards ceremony on July 29, 2019, at the Joint Statistical Meetings/IMS Annual Meeting in Denver.
Gregory Herek, professor emeritus in the Department of Psychology, devoted nearly 40 years to studying prejudice against sexual minorities, anti-gay violence and AIDS-related stigma. The "Journal of Homosexuality" recently commemorated the broad impacts of his research with a special issue, with articles on a range of new studies that build on Herek’s work.
Wiebke Bleidorn, an associate professor of psychology, was recently selected by the European Federation of Psychologists' Associations to receive its 2019 Comenius Early Career Psychologist Award. The award is given to a young psychologist from Europe for original contributions to psychology.

Caitlin Patler, assistant professor of sociology, received the Distinguished Contribution to Sociological Perspectives award on March 29, 2019, at the Pacific Sociological Association’s annual meeting in Oakland, California. Patler was recognized for her research study exploring when and under what circumstances diverse undocumented youth reveal or conceal their status from school-based adults and peers, what factors influence these decisions, and how these decisions are linked to social and educational outcomes.
Professor of mathematics Jesús De Loera is one of 28 mathematicians worldwide elected to the 2019 class of fellows of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. De Loera was recognized for outstanding service to the community and exemplary research, including contributions to discrete geometry and optimization, polynomial algebra, and mathematical software.
