5 College Faculty Join Ranks of Chancellor’s Fellows

Five early-career faculty members in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science are adding a new title after their names: Chancellor’s Fellow, in recognition of their outstanding work in academia. Each keeps the title for five years and receives $25,000 in philanthropic support for research or other scholarly work.

1977 - Cynthia Friend

Cynthia Friend (B.S., chemistry, ’77), a professor of chemistry and materials science at Harvard University, was recently named incoming president of the Kavli Foundation. The foundation supports the advancement and public understanding of science, establishing research institutes at universities and awarding $1 million Kavli Prizes in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience.

Free Textbooks Site Passes 500M Views

LibreTexts, a free textbook project launched by UC Davis chemistry professor Delmar Larsen, has now passed a half-billion page views since it was founded in 2008 as ChemWiki.

In Memoriam: Marilyn Olmstead

Marilyn Olmstead, a leader in X-ray crystallography and a stellar teacher who shared her passion for chemistry with thousands of students, died September 30. She was 76. 

Jackson Wins Lilienfeld Prize

William Jackson, distinguished professor emeritus of chemistry, has been awarded the American Physical Society’s Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize.

David Olson Receives Neurochemistry Award

Assistant Professor David Olson has received the American Society for Neurochemistry’s Jordi Folch-Pi Memorial Award. The award is given to an outstanding young investigator who has demonstrated a high level of research competence and originality, has significantly advanced our knowledge of neurochemistry, and shows a high degree of potential for future accomplishments.

Using Machine Learning to Analyze Atomic Structure

Germanium-manganese compounds can have a wide variety of structures with different electronic, magnetic or thermal properties. Scientists are interested in these materials which could have applications in next-generation technology for memory storage, sensors or electronics, among other things. But working out the properties of these materials can be challenging, especially for compounds that only exist under conditions of high heat or pressure.
