Hellman Fellowships Give Early-Career Faculty a Research Boost

Seven assistant professors in the College of Letters and Science have been named to UC Davis’ newest class of Hellman Fellows. The Hellman Fellows Fund provides grants to more than 100 junior faculty members annually at all 10 UCs and four private institutions. The fellowships of up to $50,000 are intended to give early-career faculty extra support for their research.

Students’ Biodegradable Diaper Project Continues to Grow

Excitement for a biodegradable diaper designed by UC Davis students just keeps growing, like the bacterial cellulose the diaper is made from. The student group, dubbed Team Sorbit, was motivated to create the diaper by data showing about 4 million tons of disposable diapers end up in landfills, and the plastic and tree-pulp derived cellulose used in most diapers isn’t environmentally friendly.

Graduate Students in Humanities and Arts Display Creativity in Exhibition

An expansive exhibition by UC Davis graduate students from studio art, design, music, creative writing, English, art history, theatre and cultural studies opens May 29 at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art. The annual exhibition by students in the College of Letters and Science will be on display through June 16.

Two NSF CAREER Awards for College of Letters and Science Faculty

Two professors in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science have received prestigious CAREER awards from the National Science Foundation. The NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) program supports junior faculty who perform outstanding research, are excellent educators, and integrate outreach in their work.

A Medal for Keith David Watenpaugh

The Institute of International Education today awarded a Centennial Medal to Keith David Watenpaugh, director of Human Rights Studies at UC Davis. The presentation took place at the institute’s Centennial Summit in New York City.

Physics Professors Receive Sloan Research Fellowships

Four young faculty members at the University of California, Davis, have been awarded prestigious Sloan Research Fellowships, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation announced today (Feb. 19). The two-year fellowships are worth $70,000 each.
