UC Davis Statistics Maintains Top Ranking

The UC Davis Department of Statistics continues to lead in educating undergraduates, ranking third among statistics degree-granting institutions in the U.S. in 2019, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

The new ranking was reported by the American Statistical Association, and three of the top five are UCs. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is first, followed by UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Purdue University and UCLA.

The Department of Statistics at UC Davis has seen tremendous growth in the past five years, from 60 bachelor’s degrees awarded in 2015 to 195 bachelor’s degrees awarded in 2019. Department chair Alex Aue said the ranking is a testament to the outstanding service provided to students and the campus by Undergraduate Program Coordinator Kim McMullen and Professor Debashis Paul, the department’s vice chair for undergraduate affairs.

Students in the statistics major can choose to pursue a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science. The Bachelor of Science offers five tracks, the newest of which is machine learning, added for fall 2020. The machine learning track focuses on algorithms and statistical models that teach computers to search for patterns in data — a skill set in high demand by employers today.
