Historian Arnold Bauer’s Life Celebrated In Chilean Valley He Loved

Nearly nine months after history professor emeritus Arnold Bauer died in Davis at age 84, his ashes made a final journey “home” to Chile.

Family, friends and former students held a memorial ceremony April 19 in a chapel of a historic estate featured in Bauer’s book, Chilean Rural Society: From the Spanish Conquest to 1930.

Colleague and friend Charles Walker said that El Huique hacienda, located in the Colchagua Valley about two hours south of Santiago, often led Bauer to compare the region with his native Kansas.

“He loved El Huique’s beauty, its simple architecture, impressive chapel, rich fields, and nearby mountains, and over the decades he brought countless students and friends to visit,” Walker, a professor of history, writes in a recent blog entry.
