English Grad is Pen America Award Winner

MoralesAngela Morales (English, ’91) has won a Pen America Literary Award for her book of essays The Girls in My Town. The autobiographical essays are about growing up in Los Angeles.

The judges wrote of her work: “The elegantly structured essays in this collection illuminate the politics of everyday life with quiet wit and real humanity. California’s Central Valley is lovingly rendered here, as are the lives of women, in bowling alleys and appliance stores, in maternity wards and community college classrooms.”

Morales, a graduate of the University of Iowa's nonfiction writing program, lives in Pasadena and teaches at Glendale Community College. Her work has appeared in Best American Essays 2013, Harvard Review, The Southern Review and The Los Angeles Review.
