Seven assistant professors in the College of Letters and Science have been named to UC Davis’ newest class of Hellman Fellows. The Hellman Fellows Fund provides grants to more than 100 junior faculty members annually at all 10 UCs and four private institutions. The fellowships of up to $50,000 are intended to give early-career faculty extra support for their research.
The UC Davis College of Letters and Science has established a new prize to recognize and support faculty whose research, teaching, and service exemplifies the transformational intellectual and human value of the liberal arts and sciences. For 2019-20, the prize will include a privately funded award of $10,000.
Faculty in the College of Letters and Science were awarded $62.5 million to support research across the liberal arts and sciences in 2018-19, the College’s strongest research funding year ever.
Charles “Chuck” Fadley, a pioneer in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and distinguished professor emeritus of physics at UC Davis, died at his home in Berkeley on Aug. 1. He was 77.
Winston Ko, a UC Davis physics professor emeritus and dean emeritus of mathematical and physical sciences in the College of Letters and Science, died unexpectedly Friday (July 26) while hiking with family members in the Big Sur area. He was 76.
Professor of Statistics Debashis Paul has been elected to Fellowship in the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. IMS Fellowship honors the outstanding research and professional contributions of members in the field of statistics and probability. Each newly-elected Fellow will be presented with a plaque during the IMS awards ceremony on July 29, 2019, at the Joint Statistical Meetings/IMS Annual Meeting in Denver.

Håkon Hope, professor emeritus of chemistry at UC Davis, died Nov. 22 at his home in Davis. He was 87.
Hope was a leading researcher in X-ray crystallography, and was known for his pioneering work developing low-temperature methods in biological macromolecule crystallography. His work is widely recognized as resulting in a complete transformation of the practice of biocrystallography. Hope joined the Department of Chemistry in 1965, retiring as professor emeritus in 1993.
Distinguished Professor of Chemistry Carlito Lebrilla is one of 10 UC Davis faculty members newly elected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Distinguished Professor Emeritus and world-renowned geologist Eldridge Moores died unexpectedly Sunday (Oct. 28) while on a geology field trip. He was 80. Moores began his career at UC Davis more than 52 years ago as a founding member of the Department of Geology (now known as Earth and Planetary Sciences) and the College of Letters and Science.
