Faculty Honored by Campus Peers for Research, Teaching Excellence

Seven College of Letters and Science faculty are among 16 UC Davis scholars honored by the Academic Senate and Academic Federation this year. The Academic Senate’s highest honor, the Faculty Distinguished Research Award, goes to Gail Goodman, distinguished professor of psychology.

Two Mathematicians Awarded Sloan Fellowships

Assistant Professor Laura Starkson, Department of Mathematics, is one of two UC Davis faculty named as 2021 Sloan Research Fellows by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Considered one of the most prestigious fellowships given to young researchers, the Sloan Research Fellowship includes $75,000 over two years to support the fellow’s research.

5 College Faculty Join Ranks of Chancellor’s Fellows

Five early-career faculty members in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science are adding a new title after their names: Chancellor’s Fellow, in recognition of their outstanding work in academia. Each keeps the title for five years and receives $25,000 in philanthropic support for research or other scholarly work.

Six Faculty Awarded Hellman Fellowships

Six assistant professors in the College of Letters and Science have been named to UC Davis’ newest class of Hellman Fellows. The Hellman Fellows Fund provides grants to more than 100 junior faculty members annually at all 10 UCs and four private institutions. The fellowships of up to $50,000 are intended to give early-career faculty extra support for their research.

UC Davis Statistics Maintains Top Ranking

The UC Davis Department of Statistics continues to lead in educating undergraduates, ranking third among statistics degree-granting institutions in the U.S. in 2019, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

Free Textbooks Site Passes 500M Views

LibreTexts, a free textbook project launched by UC Davis chemistry professor Delmar Larsen, has now passed a half-billion page views since it was founded in 2008 as ChemWiki.

In Memoriam: Marilyn Olmstead

Marilyn Olmstead, a leader in X-ray crystallography and a stellar teacher who shared her passion for chemistry with thousands of students, died September 30. She was 76. 

New Name for Physics Department

The Department of Physics has changed its name to the Department of Physics and Astronomy to better reflect its breadth of teaching and faculty expertise.
