5 Honored as Chancellor’s Fellows

Five associate professors in the College of Letters and Science have been honored with an additional title: Chancellor’s Fellow. Jessica Bissett Perea (Native American studies), Rana Jaleel (gender, sexuality and women’s studies), Xiaodong Li (statistics), David Olson (chemistry) and Caitlin Patler (sociology) are among 13 faculty campuswide selected to the 2022-23 class of Chancellor’s Fellows.

Mellon Foundation Awards $1.5M for Disability Studies

Ryan Lee Cartwright, an American studies professor in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science, has received a $1.5 million award from the Mellon Foundation for a project to explore the intersection of research on disability and chronic illness. The three-year project in partnership with Yale University aims to develop a national network of scholars, culture workers and organizers who will bring disability justice approaches to the study of chronic illness.

International Honors for Two Public Engagement Champions

Liza Grandia, associate professor of Native American studies, and Keith David Watenpaugh, professor and director of human rights studies, have been honored by the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE) for research and partnerships with a tangible impact on the daily lives of people in countries such as Guatemala and Syria.

Research Grants in College Rebound to Near-Record High

After closing 2021-22 with a near-record high of $65.7 million in grants and contracts representing 448 projects — the most ever recorded — the UC Davis College of Letters and Science started this year even stronger. In the first quarter of 2022-23, faculty received more than $25.5 million in research funding, up 37.8 % from the same period last year.

9 College Faculty Join Society of Hellman Fellows

Nine early-career faculty in the College of Letters and Science were recently named to UC Davis’ 15th annual class of Hellman Fellows. They are among 12 faculty campuswide to receive Hellman Fellowships. Grants to the 2022 fellows, all of them assistant professors, range from $15,500 to $36,000.

College Honors Five Faculty as Prized Teachers

Five faculty acclaimed for educational leadership in the UC Davis departments of Chemistry, Mathematics, Native American Studies, Psychology, and Spanish and Portuguese are recipients of the 2022 College of Letters and Science Teaching Awards. The annual awards recognize outstanding teaching on the undergraduate and graduate levels, both inside and outside the classroom.

Grant Awarded for Ongoing Muslim Women and Media Project

Suad Joseph, Distinguished Research Professor of Anthropology and Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, is among a cohort of three interdisciplinary teams awarded $45,000 each from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) to advance public understanding of global religions. The new award builds on an ongoing UC Davis project on Muslim women and the media, as well as a New York Times media project, both led by Joseph. “Decolonizing the Representation of Muslim Women in the Media: Training Next Generation Journalists” is an extension of Joseph's 25 years as general editor of "Encyclopedia of Women and Islamic Cultures."
